THE PRICELY BUYING GUIDE

Best SEO writing and rank tracking tools for a one-person blog (2026)

13 tools compared · Prices checked 3 Nov 2026

About our affiliate links

If you run a blog or a newsletter archive on your own, search traffic comes from two habits: writing each article around what already ranks for its topic, and checking where your pages sit afterwards. The tools below cover those habits, plus the big suites that bundle keyword research, backlinks and audits.

Prices here range from free to $999 a month, and most of the expensive plans are built for agencies managing dozens of sites. For one person the useful questions are narrower: how many articles or keywords does the cheapest plan cover, does it now include tracking in AI answers (most tools added this in 2026), and can you get a refund if it doesn't fit. Plans and terms were read from each tool's own pages on 3 Nov 2026.

Quick picks

  • Start free: Google Search Console shows the searches you already appear for, and costs nothing.
  • Free rank tracking: Seobility's free plan tracks 10 keywords for 1 website.
  • Cheapest content optimizer: Neuronwriter, $19.17/mo billed yearly, with a 30-day refund on your first plan.
  • AI articles in bulk: SEOWriting, $14/mo billed yearly for up to 50 articles.
  • One site, no surprise bills: Frase Starter, $39/mo billed yearly, stops at its limit instead of charging overage.

How these tools were compared

This guide is built from what each company publishes. For every tool it checks:

  • The cheapest plan that removes the free limits, monthly and yearly.
  • What that plan covers: articles, tracked keywords, websites, AI answer tracking.
  • The free plan or trial, and whether it needs a card.
  • Refund and cancellation terms, which vary more in this category than in any other on this site.

Write and optimize articles

These tools read the pages ranking for your keyword and tell you what your draft is missing. Some also write the draft for you.

SEOWriting

Visit SEOWriting PartnerFreemium

from $19/mo

Free plan: 3 articles

SEOWriting writes search-optimized articles in one click or in bulk, generates images and keywords, and can post up to 100 articles at a time to WordPress. The free plan gives 3 articles on standard models.

Starter is $19/mo ($14/mo billed yearly) for up to 50 articles, with internal linking, an editor, a content score and live search data. Watch the credit cost: most models use 1 credit per article, advanced OpenAI and Anthropic models use 4, and the top Anthropic model uses 10, so 50 credits can mean as few as 5 articles. There is a full refund within 14 days if you used less than half the credits.

On Trustpilot, SEOWriting scores 4.5 from 366 reviews. Bloggers running several sites praise it for getting articles started; one reviewer warns to revoke your OpenAI key if you connect it and stop using the tool.

Pick it if you publish many articles and will edit AI drafts rather than write from scratch.

Neuronwriter

Neuronwriter scores your content against the pages that rank and suggests terms, questions and structure. It now also monitors whether AI assistants mention you. The 7-day trial runs on the Gold plan.

Bronze costs $23/mo ($19.17/mo yearly) for 2 projects, 25 documents a month and 15,000 AI credits. The content designer and plagiarism checks start on Gold at $69/mo. Neuronwriter lets you request a refund on your first plan within 30 days, the most forgiving policy in this guide.

On Trustpilot, Neuronwriter scores 4.5 from 69 reviews. Reviewers like the automatic competitor analysis and content score, and several mention switching from pricier tools.

Pick it if you write your own articles and want guidance on what to cover, at the lowest price here.

Frase

Visit Frase Free trial

from $49/mo

Trial: 7-day trial, no card

Frase researches a topic, builds outlines and topic clusters, writes and optimizes drafts, and tracks visibility in ChatGPT and Google AI. Its 7-day trial gives the Professional feature set with 5 articles and needs no card.

Starter is $49/mo ($39/mo billed yearly) for 1 site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month. Frase says Starter holds at the limit until the cycle resets, so a surprise charge never happens; higher plans can switch on pay-as-you-go at $5 an article.

On Trustpilot, Frase scores 3.7 from 68 reviews. Reviews are mixed: some praise responsive support, others found the workflow complicated and the articles below par.

Pick it if you run one site and want research, writing and optimization in one tool without overage risk.

The 14-day trial is fully functional. Payments are non-refundable except when the service was not delivered, and only one person can be signed in at a time.

On Trustpilot, SE Ranking scores 4.2 from 718 reviews. Reviewers praise the easy interface, keyword tracking, responsive support and value for money.

Pick it if you track many keywords and want a suite at a lower price than Semrush or Ahrefs.

See pricing

The free Basic plan covers 1 website, 10 tracked keywords, 100 crawled pages and 5 tool credits a day, the most useful free allowance among the suites. Premium is 59.90 €/mo (47.92 €/mo yearly) for 3 sites and 300 keywords. Cancel before the trial ends and nothing is charged.

On Trustpilot, Seobility scores 4.4 from 89 reviews. Reviewers describe it as clean and easy, and some find the free site analysis useful on its own.

Pick it as your first suite: start free and upgrade only when 10 keywords feel tight.

from $139/mo

Semrush covers keyword and competitor research, position tracking, site audits and AI search visibility. The free plan gives 1 demo project and 10 reports a day. The SEO plan is $139/mo ($117.33/mo yearly) for 5 sites and 500 daily keywords. The 7-day money-back guarantee applies only to first-time yearly subscriptions, not to monthly plans.

On Trustpilot, Semrush scores 1.6 from 1,427 reviews. Recent reviewers mostly complain that free trials turned into paid plans without clear warning, and that refunds were refused.

Pick it if you need deep competitor research and can use the yearly plan.

Ahrefs

from $129/mo

Free plan: Limited access for site owners

Ahrefs is known for its backlink and keyword data, with Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, audits, a rank tracker and Brand Radar. Site owners get free limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit. Lite is $129/mo ($108/mo yearly) for 750 tracked keywords and 6 months of history. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts and does not issue refunds in general.

On Trustpilot, Ahrefs scores 2.1 from 322 reviews. Daily users say Site Explorer is hard to replace; critics question its traffic estimates and warn about extra charges.

Pick it if backlinks matter to your strategy. Use the free owner access first.

Search Atlas

from $99/mo

Trial: 7-day trial with onboarding

Search Atlas automates SEO with its OTTO assistant and adds content writing, site audits, link building and AI visibility. The 7-day trial includes a 30 minute onboarding call. Pick it if you want SEO tasks done for you on one site and will use the trial fully before paying.

What to check before you commit

  • Refund terms vary widely. Neuronwriter gives 30 days on a first plan, SEOWriting 14 days. SE Ranking, Ahrefs and Search Atlas generally refuse, and Semrush refunds only yearly plans.
  • Credit math. SEOWriting's advanced models use 4 to 10 credits per article. Local Falcon credits expire monthly.
  • Yearly-only prices. Surfer lists its plans as yearly prices.
  • Currency. Seobility and Nightwatch price in euros.
  • AI answer tracking is now in most plans. Check how many prompts the cheapest plan tracks before paying extra for a separate tool.

Which one should you pick?

  • You are starting a blog: Google Search Console plus Seobility's free plan.
  • You write your own articles and want guidance: Neuronwriter.
  • You want AI drafts at volume: SEOWriting.
  • You run one site and want an all-in-one writing workflow: Frase.
  • Your business depends on local search: Local Falcon.
  • Traffic is growing and you need research and backlinks: Ahrefs or Semrush on a yearly plan.

How this guide was put together

The tool list comes from the guides that rank highest for this job, One Little Web on content tools, One Little Web on rank trackers and Marketer Milk, plus tools that run partner programs. Plans, limits and terms come from each tool's own pricing, FAQ and refund pages, read on 3 Nov 2026. User ratings and review themes come from each tool's Trustpilot page, read the same day; they reflect what reviewers chose to post, not a survey of all users.
